Regular scaling and polishing keeps your teeth and gums clean, helps prevent bad breath and keeps your mouth healthy for longer. We remove the plaque and tartar on your teeth, and our equipment makes sure none is left behind.
Plaque and tartar
Plaque is the soft, sticky layer that builds up on teeth. It is mostly bacteria. They feed on the sugar in what you eat and drink and give off acid, which dissolves the minerals in the tooth surface. If that happens too often, the teeth decay.
Tartar, also called calculus, is plaque that has hardened. It gives more plaque somewhere to collect and makes it harder to brush away. If plaque builds up, its bacteria can cause gum disease, and the gums become sore and infected.
What we do
You can’t brush tartar off. Your dentist removes it with ultrasonic instruments, which is the “scaling”, then polishes your teeth. At the same visit we look for problems early and give you advice on caring for your teeth day to day.
We recommend a clean and check-up every six months, along with careful brushing and flossing every day.
