Lipstick and your smile

How the colour of your lipstick and the way you line your lips change how white your teeth look.

Make-up can add a finishing touch to your smile. Bright red suits some people; others look better in soft pink or burgundy. The shape of your lips changes your smile too.

Choose a cooler shade

A warm, orange-toned lipstick makes teeth look more yellow than a cooler, bluish shade such as burgundy.

Match your skin tone

On fair skin, pink lipstick, from light pink to a stronger pink, usually works best and brings out a delicate complexion. Go carefully with brown and copper shades, which can make fair skin look grey, and avoid orange on very pale skin. On darker skin, try brick red, brownish and tomato-red shades.

Shape your lips

Thin lips

Outline your lips with a natural-coloured lip pencil, following their outer edge without going past it. Colour in the inside of the lips too, except the very centre. Then add a glossy lipstick in a light colour, or a lip gloss.

Full lips

Dab a little foundation along the edges of your lips first. Then draw along the inner line of the lips with a lip pencil a shade lighter than your lipstick. A matte lipstick works best; avoid very dark or very bright colours. Stay inside the pencil line as you apply it. The colour goes on evenly, stands out well and won’t smear.
