Keeping teeth white

Why few people have naturally white teeth, and what brushing, whitening and veneers can each do about stains.

Well-kept teeth make a good first impression, and good daily care is what keeps them that way. It prevents plaque, the main cause of problems in the mouth: cavities (caries), inflamed gums (gingivitis) and gum disease (periodontitis).

Why teeth aren’t white

Few people have naturally white teeth. The colour of a tooth comes mostly from the dentin, and that is set by your genes.

Brushing well, gently but thoroughly, from childhood and for the rest of your life goes a long way to keeping teeth white. It matters for their health as much as their colour. Some discolouration you can’t prevent, such as staining from some medicines.

Stains on the outside of the teeth, from tea, coffee or cigarettes, can be managed with whitening.

Look after them

Brush well, floss and see your dentist for regular check-ups. Teach your children the same habits. It saves a lot of damaged, yellow or brown teeth.

Whitening

Too much coffee, tea or smoking? Whitening, also called bleaching, can make your teeth whiter. You can have it done by your dentist, or at home with a GlamSmile whitening set.

Veneers

If whitening doesn’t help because the stain is inside the tooth, veneers can cover it. Veneers are ultra-thin shells fitted over the front of your teeth, without major work on the teeth underneath. With GlamSmile veneers that takes two visits and about two hours of treatment.
